THE HISTORY OF NEW HOPE

New Hope Presbyterian Church is a young church by any standard.

It all started eleven years ago when a few good people met and with help from the local Presbytery and some others, a Core Group was assembled to “build a church”. From this humble start the church grew and less than a year later became chartered with 153 adults and 102 children. The membership continued to grow at an astounding 18% per year until now it has nearly 600 members and hundreds of children.

Throughout this life of rapid growth the church has met in several different places. First it was in Mr. Towles home (in the basement, yet) as it became organized and then it met in a number of places as church leadership struggled to keep up with the growth—Shirley Brothers Chapel, Conner Prairie, then the Hamilton S.E. School auditorium. At last its own building was completed at the corner of 126th and Brook School road (its present location) in December of 1997. In the year 2001 a 10,000 square foot education wing was opened for use.

The founding Pastor, C. Denison, was with us from the start of the church in 1993 until late 2000 and guided the church through the times of growth and first organization. Shortly thereafter Reverend Roy Sharpe took over as the Interim Pastor until spring of 2003. From early 1998 until mid-2003 Reverend James Friedewald was the Associate Pastor of Congregational Life and afforded us the continuity so necessary to thrive. Through all this time the church continued to grow. New positions were developed and filled, the organization matured and the work of the church continued.

In the spring of 2003 the congregation accepted Dr. Steven Ebling as Chief of Staff and Lead Pastor of New Hope Presbyterian Church. Dr. Ebling came to the church with many years experience and an energetic approach to ministry at New Hope that is both refreshing and challenging.
